Tything Parish of Carisbrooke
The king William the Conqueror took possession of the Isle of Wight, and at the time of the Survey the castle, which stood upon a virgate of land in the manor of Alvington, belonged to King William. The lordship and castle were granted with the Isle of Wight to Richard de REDVERS about 1100
C.1141 copy of a grant and confirmation from Baldwin RIVERIIS (REDVERS), Earl of Exeter and lord of the Isle of Wight, with consent of Richard de REDVERS, his son to the monks of Tyron of the church founded in honour of the Holy Cross by Robert COLAWS on his petsimorial estate beside the said Baldwin’s town of Carisbrook, with the consent of his brethren Cerverius de AULA, Hugh GERON and Brian de INSULA endowing it with all his own domain lands of “sida” SHIDE with the meadow belonging to it Lonford Mill and 20 acres of land on the hill.
1120 Lands 2nd part of William COLAWS to Abbey of Tiron,, transferred to Abbey of St. Cross.
1227–8 half a knight’s fee in Alvington, Shide and ‘Hedenesham’ belonged to Simon de DAVENTRY and Joan his wife, apparently in right of Joan as the daughter of Lucy wife of Thomas de PARCO, who held a third of the estate
1391 Lands parish of William of WYKEHAM, bishop of Winchester, endowment to St Cross.
Alverton Manor of Shide ½ part pastures called Shide down, Ryall Wood, Brode Mead for rental to St Cross

1549 John WADHAM sold Alvington and Shide to John HARVEY, yeoman, servant of Wadham.
1551 John HARVEY and Alexander, son for life; Ralph HARVEY, 2nd son, died 1558, Mary his widow, Thomas HARVEY, son off.
In or about 1620 John Serle gave £50 for the poor, which was invested in land in the common field. The property now consists of a meadow at Shide, producing £12 yearly.
